Kia Ora Netball Club Selection Policy

There have been many queries over the past few years about our Selection policy, so to ensure that everyone understands here are the features we look at when selecting teams.

Team and Player Selection Policy

  1. Purpose

    • To provide players with the opportunity to represent Kia Ora Netball Club at a level suitable to their ability and to enhance players enjoyment of the game. Through the selection of teams, Kia Ora Netball Club aims to: ensure all registered players be given equal opportunity to be considered for a team and provided with skill development opportunities to assist them reach their potential. Provide suitably qualified coaches and professional services.

    • Premier Teams: Select one team of netball players per grade with the level of competencies required to achieve the goal of obtaining top four position in the Premier competition with the goal of winning and achieving a spot in higher Premier grades.

    • Premier Reserve Teams: Select teams of netball players with the level of competencies required to be able to compete and retain the position in their starting grade with the goal of securing promotion of a Kia Ora team to the next grade.

    • Senior Teams: To ensure all registered players are placed in an appropriate team that will allow them to develop their netball skills and enhance their enjoyment of the game.  To secure a Senior 1 top position earning a place in Premier Reserve 5.

  2. Trial Format

    • Registrations must be received at least 1 week prior to the first trial.

    • All players must attend all three trials unless they have advised of their non-attendance.

    • If you cannot attend a trial due to illness or injury notification must reach Gayle by 9am on the day of the trial so trial sheets can be rejigged and no one is hanging around waiting.

    • All registrations collected prior to the first trial are placed into trial teams set out for the first trial in their preferred positions.

    • Trials are staggered throughout the day with senior teams in the morning, Premier, and Premier reserve in the afternoon.

    • Trialists may be invited to stay back for the next section of grade trials if they have been considered to be in the wrong group. Games will be approx. 10 mins in length and the selection panel will attempt to trial you in every position you have listed on your registration form (up to a maximum of 3 preferred positions).

    • During the trials, the selectors will evaluate individual skill levels, fitness and team playing abilities of each player. The following aspects will be evaluated to determine which team a player is selected for e.g. warm up, fitness, player combinations, skills, coach-ability, attitude, leadership, communication, team dynamics and individual player characteristics.

  3. Selection Panel

    • Gayle Hare, Tessa Brown and Kirstin Semmens will convene the selection panel for the trials. Other selectors may include appointed coaches at each level, and/or Kia Ora Committee members.

  4. Competencies and Qualities Considered

    • The major criterion for selection will be based on the performance of the player at the appropriate trial.

    • Selectors will also consider team balance where the 8-11 best individual players may not provide the best team combination. Ideally, teams should have a variety of combinations to cover such events as sickness, injury or unavailability during the season.

    • Consideration may be given to other such factors that the selection panel considers in its sole discretion to be relevant and appropriate to the overall assessment of a particular player.

    • These may include: positional balance within squad; balance of experience and youth in the group; and previous performance within Kia Ora Netball Club.

  5. Player Withdrawals

    • In the event of a player withdrawing after selection prior to the commencement of the team trainings, selectors will consult the list of previous trialists and appoint a suitable replacement. Due to injury, the team coach will consult with the selection panel convenor.

  6. Naming of Teams

    • Teams will be named directly after the final trial of all Premier, Premier Reserve and Senior grades.

  7. Non-Attendance at Trials

    • Players unable to attend trials for any reason will have their team selection based on availability of positions within the teams, information provided by the coach at the conclusion of the previous season and through consultations with the selectors, the coaches and Kia Ora Committee.

  8. Disputes Procedures

    • We know there will be, at times, extremely difficult choices to be made which will require the Selection Panel to exercise its discretion and judgement.

    • Providing the Selection Panel has properly considered the criteria and considerations set out in this Policy, and has exercised its discretion and judgement in good faith, then the Selection Panel will have fulfilled all of its obligations under this Policy.

    • If players feel that they have been selected in a team which is clearly not at their ability level and this is severely impacting on their enjoyment of the game, you can request to have a selection review. This request must be in writing to the Kia Ora Netball Club President and sent via email: gayle@innovativepackaging.co.nz

    • Your complaint will then be discussed by the Kia Ora Netball Committee and a response will be given, in coordination with selectors’ feedback.
