The game was: a tough pill to swallow. Due to injuries and absences we were down to the bare 7 this week. After a solid win previously against NCOG we were slightly confident leading up to this game, however there were rumours they had been missing a few key players and we knew they would want to bring their A game – and that they did. NCOG got out to a 6 goal lead after the first quarter, leaving us on the back foot and chasing their score. Our second quarter was our strongest, we gained more turnover ball and only gave them 1 more point over us. Unfortunately our heads dropped and they steam rolled ahead in the final half of the game. Some of the basics let us down such as patience, placement of passes, not doing the work off the ball to get free and not adjusting to the contact calls from the refs. It was physical out there but NCOG have always played ‘smart’ netball rather than rely on speed which is what we needed to do.
A highlight was : our second quarter where we were a lot stronger and the regardless of the score we did not give up. It was an unlucky game but this week I saw Ash take more control of the shooting circle, she got majority of the ball and had to do a lot of work to try and get the front hold on and work it in closer to the goal. We did show some nice passages of play but unfortunately we weren’t consistent and the energy on court was a bit flat.
A special mention to: POD went to Katy for her epic defensive performance in every quarter. She gained 7 turnovers in total and shut down her opposition as much as possible. She never gave up and was hungry for everything! Katy turned up to warm up munching back a Wishbone sandwich, I thought ‘man you’re going to get a stitch!’ – If she plays like that then we gotta get that girl a sandwich before every game! Well done Katy, much deserved POD
Following this game we plan to...: focus on basics. We had a lot of turnovers but we didn’t get many attempts at goal which highlights the struggle we had getting the ball down court and in to our shooters. We need to do more work off the ball, time our drives for straight line passing, address the 50/50 passing, be patient and allow our players and shooters to set up before we let the ball go and set up more triangles and screens. We also need to get our mojo back and have the strong mind set we started the season with, we have a great team and we all need to support and lift each other out on court.
Thanks to: Jacqs and Tash for being our sideline subs and for your support. Jacqs came on in the 3rd quarter to give Megan a break, she got a deflection, shut down a lot of centre passes to the WA and slotted in nicely with the team. Thanks so much ladies!
